My dog gets black around the neck from his collar? Is this bruising?

I have a pure white dog, who is a purebred pitbull and usually i try to keep a choke collar on him (it works really good, since he is such a strong dog) but i noticed recently that his neck has ben getting black from the choke collar and his hair is falling off on his neck. i took the collar off but now he is running around without a collar cause he slips through all of the collars i put on him. why does that happen to his neck and what collar should i use on him?
