Is it safe to laser engrave a new iPod?

I bought mine from Sam’s Club to save a few bucks, and I know a local high school with a laser engraver.

They use said engraver with metal, glass, paper, and wood. It has the capacity to etch on the back of the iPod.

Would it be safe to ask them to engrave the iPod, or would it possibly damage it or void the warranty?

I don’t want any “I think” or “I don’t know” answers.
